WHAT YOU SMELL IS NOT CHRISTMAS!
Ever heard anyone say they smelt Christmas, I guess that you probably have, or might have even said so yourself. Don’t be alarmed, I’ve said so too, myself. But what if I told you that what you smell is not Christmas.
As a child, I had always thought it an odd feeling to think I could smell Christmas, and even that I was the only one who shared the opinion. I grew up believing I was a weirdo to think this way.
It is way before the twenty-twenty day of the twelfth was dawn. It is long before the Saharan children started chanting their local play song "Lekeleke give me water finger." It is before the severity of the harmattan hits. My anticipation of Christmas usually begins as early as the ninth month
Little did I know that what I smelt was not Christmas. So, for everyone who’s felt this way I’m truly sorry for bursting your bubble, but what you smelt was not Christmas.
Yes! What you smell is not Christmas but a mare change in season.
The Christmas celebration is associated with the dry season. Which usually kicks off towards the end of September. Around this time there’s a gradual but noticeable change in our environment (nature). It is by this time that leaves fall, the air becomes dryer, the unprecedented breeze that sweeps the afternoon begins. The unusual short days and longer nights(or the reverse of this) are not left behind either. Finally, the migration of the Cattle Egret(Lekeleke)
Being able to smell Christmas is only a mental association of the event to the change in season. So, when next you think you smell Christmas just remember that it’s a mental misinterpretation. But like me it’ll take tons of practice to correct this belief; as it has become a thing of habit. And not only that but simply because we relish the feeling of being able to smell Christmas.
We’re just happy weirdos.
